Last weekend I watched the much hyped movie Slumdog Millionaire, the Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches tale in which the story follows the life of the poor waiter as he explains to the police with a wonderful screenplay. The simple story itself provides the insight how sincerely it had been written. The movie has won the top film prize from Hollywood’s producers. Earlier this month, the movie won four Golden Globes including best film and also the best director. The award helps put the film in pole position for Oscar success.

Is the occasion one of national significance to us? Do you believe that citizens of the nation take pride in their country on Republic Day? Do we, as citizens really understand the importance of being a democratic republic? On a personal observations, I think democracy has lost its signifiance. Republic Day, which signifies the setting up of our democracy has become just another national holiday. After more then a half century to the introduction of the Indian Constitution, the masses takes this day is just another national holiday.

s it feasible to distinguish sincere and hearty appreciation from insincere praise or flattery? Some people are in the habit of this insincere habit of exaggerating in front of their fellow mates. This habit the virtues and personality can be witnessed particularly with elders, girl friends, bosses or employers at work place to draw favourable impression and receive weightage in their favour. They use a mix of flowery words, sweet voices and appealing gestures packaged in such a way,it becomes difficult for some one to assess their insincere and selfish motives, hidden inside it.
The incident which made me think all this happened ina meeting where I was explaining the process of formatting in a computer machine. Iwas unable to afford of more then a dry smile when I watch certain ‘Yes’ people at work places who do not dare to utter a single word in front of their superiors but instead keep on nodding and grinning in front of them. Yesterday I encountered one animal of such species. I was trying to explain to one of the key persons regarding the inability of data recovery from a drive while trying to reload some other operating system into the drive.
The key person (super boss) asked me that the new operating system must prompt us for backing up the data before fomatting the drive. Even before I can think to answer the query this gentleman who has not even a single installation in his whole life uttered ‘Certainly it does Sir’. I was exclaimed for a while on his confidence. I simply said.”I will be highly obliged if you can execute this for me, Sir”
When any one in my vicinity tries this to me I feel very bad. While crossing to a corridor one of my colleauges jumped to open the door with his bent back, head down and a grin on face, instead of thanking him i got some unpleasent vibes. I would much rather be admired and appreciated rather than flattered. Appreciation can be seen in someones eyes. I think real gratitude is more difficult to fake than false admiration. If someone appreciates what I have done they will be truly grateful. I don’t need them to praise me or flatter me, as long as I know they really appreciate me.
